~~~ The Call ~~~
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" ~ Isaiah 6:8
~ ~ ~
Have you ever asked yourself, Why am I here, in the church choir? There are probably as many reasons for being in the choir as there are choir members. Somewhere, somehow, sometime, there was a nudge that lured you out to that first choir rehearsal and made you want to stay. I think that all ministry begins with that nudge. While it may not have seemed so to you at the time, it is quite possible that the nudge was the voice of the Holy Spirit calling you to a special ministry. It is not only ordained ministers who experience a call to ministry. If that were so, the church would be a strange place; it would have no choir, no choir director or organist, ... no ushers, or church workers.
[In school,] one of my first assignments was to compile a "spiritual autobiography" that traced the people and the events that drew me toward my vocation. It was a fascinating and humbling experience.... I have a "choir autobiography" as well. I expect that you have one, too. Somehow, from your growing-up years onward, seeds were sown that influenced your decision to sing today in the church choir.
Who, or what, was part of your path to the choir? Was there a beloved music teacher or an organist whom you admired? Was there a particular choral composition that you loved and wanted to sing? Did you hear an excellent choir and want to be a part of such a sound?
Think of all the ways God calls us. They are not usually obvious ways. God speaks to us through His Word, through nudges, through people, events, and the small and subtle things in life. If you sing in the church choir, God called you - and you accepted the call - to the ministry of music.
| | July 13, 2008, Westside celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Guest musicians, the Chetta family, along with our own choirs filled the day with beautiful music. Pastor Lehn and guest Pastor, Drew Conley, both encouraged us from God's word. It was a memorable day for all! |
