Set Up a Monthly Calendar for Your Family

Quick Tips To Make a Monthly Calendar Succeed

1. Decide what type of calendar you want to use. Does each person need their own paper calendar? Will there be one master calendar? What about a large calendar on the wall? Do you want to use a computer? Make sure that whatever format you use, can hold all of your family’s monthly events and appointments.

2. Fill in all monthly appointments that you already have committed to. Add birthdays, school holidays, practices, sporting events, community activities, etc. Continue adding events to the calendar so that you will be prepared in advance.

3. Resolve calendar conflicts. If you find that the family has double booked its resources, sit down together and discuss your options. Can something be postponed, rearranged or cancelled? Can activities be split among the family members? What is most important to you and your family? These situations can actually be a great way to teach priorities to children.

4. Motivate your children to check the calendar regularly. Include surprise items like, family nights out, movies and pizza, or shopping trips. Knowing that monthly surprises might find their way into the calendar at some unexpected point can really help kids remember to check the calendar.

5. Set the example. Be diligent about using the calendar and you will teach your children to do the same. Having a calendar can eliminate stress and create more harmony in your household.

6. Just say no when you can’t. Learn to be honest when people ask you to help with activities. Check your monthly schedule and honestly explain that you are overbooked for that time period. Many of us feel compelled to offer our assistance to every project. Try choosing either one project to work extensively on, or several projects to assist lightly with.

7. Schedule relaxation time on the calendar. Trying to maintain a frantic pace of activities and monthly events can exhaust your entire family. Make sure that there are times you actually rest and spend time together with nowhere to be. Putting these on the calendar will keep you honest in maintaining relax
